Born around 1856, Naiche, son of the famous Cochise, had the position of chief thrust upon him after the untimely death of bis older brother Taza. Initially he lived at peace with the white men until he broke from the reservation in September 1881, aligning himself with Geronimo. Ultimately a tragic figure, Naiche had to bear the humility of being the chief who surrendered his people to the US Army.
